Sherwin-Williams
Sherwin-Williams was founded in 1866 in Cleveland, Ohio by Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams, and the company is widely credited with introducing one of the first ready-mixed paints in 1873, sparing painters from having to hand-mix pigments and oils on site before every job. The company grew into the largest paint and coatings manufacturer in the world by revenue, and its distinctive "Cover the Earth" logo, depicting a can of paint literally pouring over a globe, has served as one of the longest continuously used trademarks in American corporate branding since its introduction in 1905. Sherwin-Williams built an extensive network of company-owned retail paint stores across the United States, a distribution strategy setting it apart from paint brands sold primarily through third-party home improvement retailers, giving the company direct control over sales and professional contractor relationships. Sherwin-Williams's combination of its pioneering role introducing ready-mixed paint and its unusual company-owned retail store distribution model has made it one of the most commercially dominant paint brands in the world.
VS
Glidden
Glidden traces its origins to 1875 in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Francis Glidden, and the company grew into one of the most recognized mainstream paint brands in American households throughout the 20th century, widely known for its longtime advertising slogan touting reliable, everyday quality. The brand has changed corporate ownership several times over the decades, passing through SCM Corporation, Imperial Chemical Industries, and Dutch conglomerate Akzo Nobel, before its North American operations were ultimately sold to PPG Industries in 2013. Glidden has historically positioned itself as a solidly reliable, moderately priced paint brand aimed at everyday homeowners rather than competing at the premium end of the market occupied by brands like Benjamin Moore, maintaining broad distribution through major retailers. Glidden's combination of its nearly 150-year history as one of America's most recognized household paint names and its multiple corporate ownership transitions has made it one of the most enduringly familiar paint brands in the country.
