Shigeru Miyamoto
Shigeru Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 as the company's first staff artist, and he created Donkey Kong in 1981, a game that also introduced the character who would later become Mario, one of the most commercially significant and recognizable video game characters ever created. Miyamoto went on to create or co-create Nintendo's most significant ongoing franchises, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox, and his design philosophy has consistently emphasized intuitive, accessible gameplay mechanics that remain approachable to players regardless of prior gaming experience. His role at Nintendo expanded significantly over decades from individual game designer to a senior creative leadership position overseeing the company's broader game development philosophy, and Miyamoto has continued personally involved in reviewing and shaping Nintendo's major franchise releases well into the 2020s. Shigeru Miyamoto's combination of creating both Mario and The Legend of Zelda and his sustained multi-decade creative leadership at Nintendo has made him one of the most influential individual game designers in the history of the medium.
VS
Gabe Newell
Gabe Newell co-founded Valve Corporation in 1996 alongside Mike Harrington, both former Microsoft employees, and Valve's first release, "Half-Life" in 1998, became widely credited with pioneering scripted, narrative-driven level design within the first-person shooter genre. Newell led Valve's development of the Steam digital distribution platform, launched in 2003, which grew into the dominant PC game storefront in the world, fundamentally transforming how the industry sold, updated, and distributed games to a global player base. Newell has remained Valve's president while the company has maintained an unusually flat internal organizational structure without traditional management hierarchy, a distinctive corporate philosophy that Newell has personally championed and that has drawn significant attention within the broader technology and game industry. Gabe Newell's combination of his role co-creating the genre-defining Half-Life and his creation of the industry-transforming Steam platform has made him one of the most commercially and structurally significant figures in modern video game history.
