Shigeru Miyamoto
Shigeru Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 as the company's first staff artist, and he created Donkey Kong in 1981, a game that also introduced the character who would later become Mario, one of the most commercially significant and recognizable video game characters ever created. Miyamoto went on to create or co-create Nintendo's most significant ongoing franchises, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox, and his design philosophy has consistently emphasized intuitive, accessible gameplay mechanics that remain approachable to players regardless of prior gaming experience. His role at Nintendo expanded significantly over decades from individual game designer to a senior creative leadership position overseeing the company's broader game development philosophy, and Miyamoto has continued personally involved in reviewing and shaping Nintendo's major franchise releases well into the 2020s. Shigeru Miyamoto's combination of creating both Mario and The Legend of Zelda and his sustained multi-decade creative leadership at Nintendo has made him one of the most influential individual game designers in the history of the medium.
VS
Sid Meier
Sid Meier co-founded MicroProse in 1982 and created the original "Civilization" in 1991, a turn-based strategy game letting players guide a civilization from prehistory through the modern era, establishing one of the most influential and enduring franchises in the strategy game genre. Civilization's core design principle, letting players make consequential strategic decisions across an enormous historical timescale while remaining accessible enough for mainstream audiences, became a widely studied template within the game design industry for balancing genuine strategic depth with broad playability. Meier's name became so closely associated with quality game design that it was directly incorporated into numerous game titles he was involved with, including "Sid Meier's Civilization," "Sid Meier's Pirates!," and "Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon," an unusually personal branding approach within the broader video game industry. Sid Meier's combination of his foundational Civilization franchise and his distinctively personal name-branded game design legacy has made him one of the most historically significant strategy game designers in video game history.
