Sightglass Coffee
Sightglass Coffee's SoMa flagship brings the company's roastery, café bar, and headquarters together under one roof on 7th Street, the anchor location for a business founded by brothers Justin and Jerad Morrison. Rather than a small storefront café, the SoMa space was built from the start as a genuine working roastery that customers can watch operate while they order, a transparency-forward approach that set it apart from more conventional counter-only cafés when it opened. That combination — roasting equipment, a full café bar, and open sightlines into the production side of the business — gives Sightglass a different feel than a typical neighborhood coffee shop; regulars are as likely to be watching a roast in progress as they are working on a laptop over a pour-over. The space has become one of the more architecturally distinctive coffee destinations in the city specifically because of that industrial, working-roastery design. Sightglass has built its reputation on careful, light-roast sourcing in the same broad third-wave tradition as its Bay Area contemporaries, but the SoMa flagship's scale and openness — a real production facility doubling as a public café — has made it a specific destination in its own right rather than just one stop among several for serious coffee drinkers passing through the neighborhood. From that 7th Street flagship, Sightglass has expanded to additional San Francisco cafés, but the SoMa location remains the one most closely tied to the brand's identity, the place where the roasting and the retail experience are most directly connected. For a San Francisco coffee list, Sightglass is the essential "watch it happen" entry — a working roastery and café combined into one SoMa flagship built around genuine production transparency.
VS
Andytown Coffee Roasters
Andytown Coffee Roasters opened in San Francisco's Outer Sunset in 2014, founded by Michael McCrory and Lauren Crabbe, baristas-turned-roasters who chose to plant their flag close to Ocean Beach rather than in one of the city's more established coffee neighborhoods. That choice of location — a foggy, residential stretch of the Sunset with little existing specialty-coffee infrastructure — was itself a bet on a part of San Francisco other roasters had largely overlooked. The Snowy Plover is the drink that made Andytown's name: sparkling water, espresso, brown sugar, and housemade whipped cream combined into something closer to an espresso soda than a conventional latte. Weekend lines formed for it quickly after the original Lawton Street café opened, drawing customers who came specifically for the drink as much as for the direct-trade, single-origin coffee the shop was also building its reputation on. That combination — a genuinely inventive signature drink alongside serious sourcing credentials — gave Andytown a foothold distinct from cafés leaning purely on roasting pedigree or purely on novelty. The Outer Sunset location itself, close enough to Ocean Beach to draw a post-surf, post-walk crowd, has become part of the shop's identity, a neighborhood café serving a part of the city that doesn't get the same foot traffic as the Mission or SoMa. Andytown has since grown to additional San Francisco locations, but the original Lawton Street café remains the one most tied to both the Snowy Plover's origin story and the founders' original bet on the Outer Sunset as a coffee destination. For a San Francisco coffee list, Andytown is the essential "the drink is the destination" entry — a direct-trade Outer Sunset café built around a genuinely original signature drink that turned a quiet beach-adjacent neighborhood into a place people cross the city for.
