Sigur Rós
Sigur Rós brought a uniquely ethereal, orchestral dimension to post-rock, incorporating vocalist Jónsi's falsetto singing, often in an invented language called "Hopelandic" alongside actual Icelandic lyrics, and bowed guitar textures that gave their sound a distinctly otherworldly quality. Their 1999 album "Ágætis byrjun" and 2002 follow-up, released with no title and referred to simply as "( )," became landmark post-rock recordings that expanded the genre's emotional and orchestral scope well beyond its more purely instrumental, guitar-centric origins. The band's Icelandic origins and the stark, remote landscapes of their home country became closely associated with their expansive, atmospheric sound, and their international commercial success helped establish Iceland as a significant point of origin within post-rock's broader geography. Their combination of "Ágætis byrjun" and "( )'s" genre-expanding orchestral and vocal innovations has made Sigur Rós one of the most artistically distinctive and internationally significant bands in post-rock's history.

This Will Destroy You
This Will Destroy You emerged from the Texas post-rock scene in the mid-2000s, building a devoted following through heavy touring and a sound that combined the genre's characteristic crescendo-driven dynamics with a darker, more distortion-heavy intensity than many earlier post-rock acts. Their 2008 self-titled album became one of the more widely embraced post-rock releases of the genre's mid-2000s second wave, a period when the original late-1990s pioneers had already established the template that a younger generation of bands, including This Will Destroy You, continued to build on. The band's extensive film and trailer licensing placements throughout the 2010s helped introduce their instrumental sound to audiences well outside post-rock's traditional listener base, mirroring the broader trend of the genre finding commercial traction through visual media placement. Their combination of their genre-important 2008 self-titled album and their significant film and media licensing reach has made This Will Destroy You one of the most recognizable bands of post-rock's second generation.
