Sleep Number
Sleep Number, originally founded as Select Comfort in 1987, built its business around adjustable air-chamber mattress technology that lets each side of a bed be independently inflated to a specific personalized firmness level, identified by the company's proprietary numbered "Sleep Number" scale. The company's extensive network of dedicated retail showrooms, where customers can test different Sleep Number settings before purchasing, differentiated its sales approach from both traditional mattress retailers and the newer wave of direct-to-consumer, ship-in-a-box mattress competitors. Sleep Number's later expansion into smart mattress technology, including biometric tracking features that monitor a sleeper's heart rate, breathing, and movement through the mattress itself, reflected a broader company strategy of positioning its beds as health and wellness technology products rather than purely traditional bedding. Sleep Number's combination of its distinctive personalized adjustable-firmness technology and its later expansion into biometric sleep-tracking features has made it one of the most technologically differentiated mattress brands in the industry.
VS
Purple
Purple was founded by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, who had previously developed cushioning technology for wheelchairs, and the company launched its mattress business built around a distinctive proprietary gel-like "Hyper-Elastic Polymer" grid material rather than traditional foam or coils. The company's viral 2016 crowdfunding-style product demonstration video, showing raw eggs being dropped onto the Purple mattress's grid material without breaking to illustrate pressure distribution, became one of the most widely shared direct-to-consumer product marketing videos of its era. Purple's distinctive purple-colored grid material became instantly recognizable in product photography and unboxing videos, giving the brand a strong visual identity that distinguished it clearly from competitors' more visually similar white memory foam and coil mattresses. Purple's combination of its origins in wheelchair cushioning technology and its viral egg-drop marketing demonstration has made it one of the most distinctively branded mattress companies in the direct-to-consumer mattress industry.
