Sofya Velikaya
Sofya Velikaya became the most decorated saber fencer in Olympic history among women, winning Olympic gold in the team saber event across multiple Games and adding an individual gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics after two previous Olympics in which she'd won individual silver medals. Her combined tally of world championship titles across individual and team saber events places her among the most consistently dominant fencers of her generation, competing at the top of Russian saber fencing, historically one of the deepest national programs in the discipline, for well over a decade. Velikaya's individual gold at the 2016 Rio Games came after two consecutive Olympic finals losses in 2008 and 2012, a pattern of near-misses at the individual level that made her eventual breakthrough win particularly significant relative to her already substantial team and world championship achievements. Her sustained excellence across both individual and team saber competition throughout the 2010s, combined with Russia's broader historical strength in saber fencing, established Velikaya as one of the defining figures of women's saber during an era when the discipline's competitive depth was arguably at its highest point.
VS
Nedo Nadi
Nedo Nadi won five gold medals at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics alone, competing across foil, saber, and team events, a single-Olympics total that remains one of the most dominant individual performances in the history of Olympic fencing and one of the most dominant single-Games performances in any Olympic sport. He remains the only fencer in Olympic history to win gold medals in all three fencing weapons — foil, épée, and saber — a combination of technical mastery across disciplines with genuinely distinct rules and blade techniques that few fencers before or since have even attempted to pursue simultaneously. Nadi's father, Beppe Nadi, was himself a fencing master who trained Nedo from early childhood, and the family's fencing academy in Livorno, Italy became one of the most significant training centers for Italian fencing during the early 20th century, producing multiple Olympic competitors beyond Nedo himself. His combined career total of six Olympic gold medals across the 1912 and 1920 Games, achieved despite a six-year gap caused by the cancellation of the 1916 Olympics due to World War I, places Nadi among the most decorated fencers in Olympic history relative to the number of Games in which he actually competed.
