Some Like It Hot
Some Like It Hot, directed by Billy Wilder and released in 1959, follows two male musicians who disguise themselves as women to escape mob gangsters after witnessing a murder, and the American Film Institute has repeatedly ranked it the single greatest American comedy film ever made. Marilyn Monroe's performance as the band's singer, delivered during a genuinely difficult production in which Monroe's chronic lateness and personal struggles reportedly required dozens of takes for some individual scenes, is nonetheless widely regarded as one of her finest and most fully realized comedic performances. The film's daring subject matter for its era, including its extended cross-dressing plot and closing line in which a suitor learns his fiancée is actually a man and simply responds "Nobody's perfect," pushed against the restrictive Hollywood Production Code's censorship guidelines that governed acceptable content in American films at the time. Its combination of screwball comedic timing, gender-role-bending farce, and genuinely sharp dialogue has made Some Like It Hot a frequently cited benchmark for classic American film comedy, and its influence on subsequent comedic filmmaking, particularly farces built around disguise and mistaken identity, remains substantial more than six decades after its release.
VS
Airplane!
Airplane!, released in 1980 and written and directed by the trio of Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker, pioneered a rapid-fire, joke-dense parody comedy style, packing an unusually high density of visual and verbal gags into every scene rather than relying on a single central comedic premise sustained across the runtime. The film parodied the disaster movie genre, particularly the earlier film Zero Hour!, whose plot Airplane! closely follows scene-for-scene while playing every dramatic beat for absurdist comedy, and the film's deliberate casting of serious dramatic actors, including Leslie Nielsen and Robert Stack, delivering ridiculous dialogue with complete deadpan sincerity became central to its comedic approach. Airplane!'s joke-density style, layering background sight gags with rapid-fire verbal jokes and audience-expectation subversions, directly established the template that the same creative team and numerous imitators continued using across subsequent parody films throughout the 1980s and beyond. Leslie Nielsen's subsequent career pivot from a respected dramatic actor into a beloved comedic performer, built almost entirely on the deadpan delivery style he first showcased in Airplane!, reflected the film's broader influence on how deadpan, straight-faced delivery could be deployed as a comedic technique in service of increasingly absurd material.
