Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog, released in 2020, became notable before its release for an unusual mid-production redesign, after the film's initial character design for Sonic drew such intense negative fan backlash upon its first trailer reveal that the studio delayed the film's release specifically to redesign the character to more closely match the games' original visual style. That redesign decision, an unusually direct and costly response to online fan criticism, has since become a frequently cited case study in how major studios respond to fan community feedback during a film's marketing and production process. The film's box-office success, exceeding studio expectations following the redesign controversy, helped demonstrate that a genuinely faithful, fan-respectful approach to adapting a beloved game character could translate into commercial success, launching a subsequent franchise of sequels. Jim Carrey's performance as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, delivered with the kind of exaggerated physical comedy associated with his 1990s film career, gave the franchise a recognizable comedic anchor that helped extend its appeal beyond audiences specifically familiar with the source video games.
VS
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider, released in 2018 as a reboot of the earlier Angelina Jolie-led film series, drew directly on the video game franchise's own 2013 reboot for its tone and characterization, presenting a grittier, more grounded version of protagonist Lara Croft than the more overtly glamorous earlier films. Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara Croft emphasized the character's physical vulnerability and gradual development into a capable adventurer, reflecting the source game reboot's own deliberate narrative choice to depict Croft's origin story rather than an already-established expert adventurer. The film's extensive practical stunt work and its Cambodia-set jungle setting, filmed partly on location near Angkor Wat, gave Tomb Raider a genuine physical adventure film texture distinct from more digitally reliant contemporary blockbusters. Its combination of drawing directly on a well-regarded recent game reboot's tone and its committed lead performance made the 2018 Tomb Raider one of the more critically respected video game adaptations of its era, even as the film's box-office performance fell short of launching an immediate sequel.
