Sonja Henie
Sonja Henie won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in women's figure skating, at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Winter Games, a run that's never been matched by any singles skater since and that began when she was still a teenager competing against skaters years older than her. Henie also won 10 consecutive World Championship titles between 1927 and 1936, a streak of global dominance across an entire decade that remains one of the longest unbroken championship runs in any individual Olympic sport, male or female. She's widely credited with modernizing women's figure skating's presentation — introducing shorter skirts that allowed for more athletic jumps and spins, incorporating dance and theatrical choreography into competitive routines, and bringing a level of showmanship to the sport that judges and audiences hadn't previously seen. After retiring from competition, Henie became a Hollywood movie star, parlaying her Olympic fame into a film career that made her one of the highest-paid actresses in the world during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and her ice shows toured internationally, helping popularize figure skating as mainstream entertainment well beyond its competitive audience.
VS
Katarina Witt
Katarina Witt won back-to-back Olympic gold medals for East Germany at the 1984 Sarajevo and 1988 Calgary Winter Games, becoming the first skater since Sonja Henie in the 1930s to successfully defend an Olympic singles title, at a time when East German state sports programs were producing some of the era's most technically polished athletes. Her 1988 Calgary victory came amid the so-called "Battle of the Carmens," where Witt and American rival Debi Thomas both chose to skate their free programs to music from the opera Carmen — a head-to-head showdown between the two favorites that became one of the most-watched figure skating competitions in television history. Witt was known as much for her theatrical, glamorous presentation as for her technical skating, and she used that combination to win four World Championship titles alongside her two Olympic golds, becoming one of the sport's biggest global stars during the Cold War era when East German athletic success carried outsized political significance. After turning professional, Witt built a long career in touring ice shows and television, and her crossover fame outside competitive skating circles — including a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue appearance and various acting and hosting roles — made her one of the most recognizable Olympic athletes of the 1980s well beyond the sport itself.
