Sonja Henie
Sonja Henie won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in women's figure skating, at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Winter Games, a run that's never been matched by any singles skater since and that began when she was still a teenager competing against skaters years older than her. Henie also won 10 consecutive World Championship titles between 1927 and 1936, a streak of global dominance across an entire decade that remains one of the longest unbroken championship runs in any individual Olympic sport, male or female. She's widely credited with modernizing women's figure skating's presentation — introducing shorter skirts that allowed for more athletic jumps and spins, incorporating dance and theatrical choreography into competitive routines, and bringing a level of showmanship to the sport that judges and audiences hadn't previously seen. After retiring from competition, Henie became a Hollywood movie star, parlaying her Olympic fame into a film career that made her one of the highest-paid actresses in the world during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and her ice shows toured internationally, helping popularize figure skating as mainstream entertainment well beyond its competitive audience.
VS
Yuzuru Hanyu
Yuzuru Hanyu became the first men's singles skater in 66 years to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, taking titles at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 Pyeongchang Games, a feat that hadn't been accomplished by a male skater since Dick Button in the early 1950s. Hanyu's 2018 gold came just weeks after a serious ankle ligament injury that had kept him off the ice for months leading into the Games, and he competed in Pyeongchang with limited practice time, making the repeat title one of the more improbable comebacks in recent Winter Olympics history. He was the first skater in history to land a quadruple loop in competition, doing so at the 2016 Autumn Classic, and his combination of technical jump difficulty with an unusually artistic, expressive skating style made him one of the sport's most complete competitors across both the technical and presentation components judges score. Hanyu turned professional in 2022 after narrowly missing a third consecutive Olympic medal in Beijing, and his massive popularity in Japan — regularly drawing sold-out arenas for exhibition skating well after his competitive retirement — reflects a level of mainstream crossover fame that few figure skaters, male or female, have ever achieved.
