South Beach
South Beach, on Staten Island's eastern shore facing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Lower New York Bay, offers sweeping views of the bridge and passing harbor traffic, along with the longest fishing pier in New York City extending well out into the water. Its FDR Boardwalk, stretching roughly 2.5 miles along the shoreline, is one of the longest continuous beach boardwalks in the city, connecting South Beach to neighboring Midland Beach and giving visitors an unusually long stretch of walkable waterfront in a single connected path. The beach's position on Staten Island, the least visited of New York's five boroughs relative to its size, has kept South Beach considerably less crowded than the city's Brooklyn and Queens beaches, offering a genuinely different, quieter beach experience within city limits. For a New York City beaches list, South Beach is the essential "the overlooked borough's beach" entry — a Staten Island shoreline with sweeping Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge views and a 2.5-mile boardwalk, offering a quieter beach day than the city's more heavily visited shorelines.
VS
Coney Island Beach
Coney Island Beach, backed by the historic Coney Island amusement district and its landmark Wonder Wheel and Cyclone roller coaster, became one of the first mass-transit-accessible public beaches in the country following the subway's arrival in 1920, transforming it from a resort for the wealthy into a genuinely democratic public beach for the entire city. Its boardwalk, built in 1923 and running the length of the beach, remains one of the most iconic pieces of beach infrastructure in New York, lined with the neighborhood's famous food stands including the original Nathan's Famous hot dog stand, founded there in 1916. The beach's continued role as a genuinely accessible, subway-reachable beach for New Yorkers without cars has kept it one of the most heavily used public beaches in the entire city, particularly for residents of Brooklyn's dense surrounding neighborhoods. For a New York City beaches list, Coney Island is the essential "the original subway beach" entry — the amusement-park-backed shoreline that made beach access genuinely democratic for New Yorkers a century ago, and remains one of the most iconic beaches in the country.
