South Dakota State University
South Dakota State University, founded in 1881 as the state's land-grant institution, is the largest university in South Dakota, and its agricultural and biological sciences programs reflect its founding mission serving the state's substantial farming and ranching economy. The university's pharmacy program is one of the largest in the region, and SDSU's engineering and nursing programs have grown substantially, broadening the university's offerings well beyond its founding-era agricultural focus into a comprehensive research university. SDSU's Jackrabbits athletic programs, competing at the FCS football level, have built a strong regional following, and the university's Brookings campus serves as the primary public research university for the state's eastern agricultural region. The university's combination of genuine land-grant agricultural research strength and its status as South Dakota's largest university has made SDSU central to the state's higher education system and its agricultural economy.
VS
Black Hills State University
Black Hills State University, founded in 1883, has built solid education and business programs, and its location in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the heart of the scenic Black Hills region, gives the university's outdoor recreation and geology programs direct access to significant natural terrain. The university's proximity to Mount Rushmore, the Homestake Gold Mine, and other significant regional landmarks gives BHSU's tourism and hospitality management programs practical, locally relevant career preparation tied to the region's substantial tourism economy. Black Hills State's relatively small size and its scenic western South Dakota setting have made it a consistent choice for students in that part of the state seeking a public university education closer to home than the state's larger eastern institutions. The university's combination of its Black Hills regional setting and its tourism-industry-connected academic programs has made BHSU a distinctive regional public university within South Dakota's higher education system.
