South Dakota State University
South Dakota State University, founded in 1881 as the state's land-grant institution, is the largest university in South Dakota, and its agricultural and biological sciences programs reflect its founding mission serving the state's substantial farming and ranching economy. The university's pharmacy program is one of the largest in the region, and SDSU's engineering and nursing programs have grown substantially, broadening the university's offerings well beyond its founding-era agricultural focus into a comprehensive research university. SDSU's Jackrabbits athletic programs, competing at the FCS football level, have built a strong regional following, and the university's Brookings campus serves as the primary public research university for the state's eastern agricultural region. The university's combination of genuine land-grant agricultural research strength and its status as South Dakota's largest university has made SDSU central to the state's higher education system and its agricultural economy.
VS
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, is one of the most specialized and academically rigorous STEM-focused public universities in the country, with a curriculum concentrated almost entirely on engineering, mining, and applied physical sciences. The university's location in Rapid City, near both the historic Homestake Gold Mine and the Black Hills' significant mineral deposits, reflects the school's founding-era mission training engineers for the region's mining industry, a focus the university has maintained even as its programs have broadened into aerospace and other engineering fields. The school's graduates command some of the highest average starting salaries of any public university in the country, reflecting the strong industry demand for its narrowly focused, deeply technical engineering degrees. The university's combination of its founding-era mining engineering focus and its consistently strong graduate salary outcomes has made South Dakota Mines a distinctive and highly regarded specialized public university within the state's higher education system.
