Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University, founded in 1911, has built a reputation as one of Texas's leading private universities, with a Dallas campus location that gives its Cox School of Business unusually direct access to the city's concentration of Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and finance industry employers. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum sits on SMU's campus, a high-profile addition that brought national attention and academic programming tied to presidential history and public policy directly onto the university's grounds. SMU's business, law, and arts programs have each built strong regional and national reputations, and the university's relatively small size compared to the state's massive public flagships gives it a more personalized undergraduate experience while still maintaining access to a major metropolitan area's internship and career opportunities. The university's Mustangs athletic program has a storied, complicated history — including the NCAA's unprecedented 1987 "death penalty," which shut down the football program entirely for a season over recruiting violations — a scandal SMU has spent decades rebuilding its athletic reputation from, most recently through its move into the Atlantic Coast Conference.
VS
Baylor University
Baylor University, chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas, is the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in the state, predating Texas statehood itself by several months and giving it a historical claim that no other Texas university can match. As the world's largest Baptist university, Baylor maintains an explicitly Christian mission woven into its academic and campus culture, a religious identity that's central to how the university markets itself relative to the state's large secular public flagships and distinguishes it within Texas's private-university landscape. Baylor Law School is one of the oldest law schools west of the Mississippi River, and the university's business school and pre-med programs have built strong regional reputations, drawing students specifically seeking a faith-based alternative to Texas's larger research universities. The university's Bears athletic program, particularly a men's basketball national championship in 2021 and a long-competitive football program, has raised Baylor's national athletic profile considerably in recent decades, adding to a university identity historically built more around its religious mission and legal and medical programs than around sports.
