Southern University
Southern University, founded in 1880, is the flagship of the largest historically Black university system in the country, and its Baton Rouge campus overlooking the Mississippi River gives the university one of the most striking physical settings of any HBCU in the nation. The university's law school is one of the relatively few standalone HBCU law schools in the country, and Southern's agricultural and engineering programs reflect its land-grant institutional status, one of only a small handful of HBCUs holding that designation alongside more traditionally recognized land-grant universities. Southern's Human Jukebox marching band is one of the most celebrated HBCU marching bands in the country, known for its high-energy performance style, and the band's national visibility has made it a significant part of the university's broader public identity and recruitment appeal. The university's combination of its land-grant status, a standalone law school, and its celebrated marching band tradition has made Southern University one of the most institutionally significant HBCUs in the country, and its role as the flagship of the country's largest HBCU system gives it particular significance within Louisiana's public higher education landscape.
VS
Centenary College of Louisiana
Centenary College of Louisiana, founded in 1825, is the oldest chartered institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River still operating under its original charter, and its small, close-knit liberal arts college campus in Shreveport reflects nearly two centuries of continuous institutional history. The college's endowment per student ranks among the highest of any small liberal arts college in the South, funding substantial financial aid and campus resources relative to Centenary's modest overall enrollment of under 500 undergraduates. Centenary's business and pre-professional advising programs have built solid regional reputations, and the college's small size lets it maintain the kind of close individual faculty mentorship typical of elite liberal arts colleges, distinguishing it from Louisiana's larger public universities. The college's genuine historical seniority among western Mississippi River institutions, combined with its small liberal arts college scale and substantial endowment resources, has made Centenary a distinctive, if lesser-known, choice among Louisiana's private colleges.
