Southern University
Southern University, founded in 1880, is the flagship of the largest historically Black university system in the country, and its Baton Rouge campus overlooking the Mississippi River gives the university one of the most striking physical settings of any HBCU in the nation. The university's law school is one of the relatively few standalone HBCU law schools in the country, and Southern's agricultural and engineering programs reflect its land-grant institutional status, one of only a small handful of HBCUs holding that designation alongside more traditionally recognized land-grant universities. Southern's Human Jukebox marching band is one of the most celebrated HBCU marching bands in the country, known for its high-energy performance style, and the band's national visibility has made it a significant part of the university's broader public identity and recruitment appeal. The university's combination of its land-grant status, a standalone law school, and its celebrated marching band tradition has made Southern University one of the most institutionally significant HBCUs in the country, and its role as the flagship of the country's largest HBCU system gives it particular significance within Louisiana's public higher education landscape.
VS
Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University, founded in 1860, is the state's flagship public research university, and its LSU Tigers football program, playing home games in front of some of the loudest and most passionate crowds in college football at Tiger Stadium, has made the university one of the most recognizable athletic brands in the sport. The university's petroleum engineering and coastal and environmental science programs draw directly on Louisiana's significant oil and gas industry and its extensive coastal wetlands, giving LSU particular research strength in fields tied closely to the state's specific economic and geographic circumstances. LSU's veterinary medicine and law school have each built solid regional reputations, and the university's research into coastal erosion and hurricane resilience has become increasingly significant given Louisiana's ongoing and severe coastal land loss, one of the most serious environmental challenges facing any US state. The university's combination of major-program football tradition, its research strength in fields directly tied to Louisiana's oil and gas economy and coastal geography, and its role as the state's clear public flagship have made LSU central to both Louisiana's higher education system and its broader cultural identity.
