Spelman College
Spelman College, founded in 1881 by two Massachusetts missionaries in the basement of an Atlanta church to educate formerly enslaved women and their daughters, has grown into the top-ranked historically Black college or university in the country, and it remains one of the very few surviving historically Black women's colleges in the United States. The college's science and STEM programs send a disproportionately high number of Black women on to complete doctoral degrees relative to virtually any other undergraduate institution in the country, a statistic Spelman actively tracks and promotes as central to its institutional mission of preparing Black women for leadership in fields where they remain significantly underrepresented. Spelman is part of the Atlanta University Center, the largest contiguous consortium of historically Black colleges in the world, giving students cross-registration access to nearby Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse School of Medicine — an academic and social ecosystem unique to Atlanta's HBCU cluster. The college's endowment, among the largest of any HBCU in the country, has funded significant recent campus expansion and scholarship growth, and Spelman's combination of academic rigor, a mission specifically centered on Black women's leadership development, and its integration into the broader Atlanta University Center has made it one of the most selective HBCUs in the nation.
VS
Morehouse College
Morehouse College, founded in 1867 just two years after the end of the Civil War to educate formerly enslaved Black men, is the only historically Black college in the country exclusively dedicated to educating men, and its most famous alumnus, Martin Luther King Jr., graduated in 1948 before going on to lead the civil rights movement. The college's "Morehouse Man" ethos, an institutional emphasis on leadership, professionalism, and social responsibility instilled across the curriculum and campus culture, has produced a long list of prominent alumni in politics, entertainment, and civil rights activism, including filmmaker Spike Lee and numerous elected officials. As part of the Atlanta University Center consortium alongside Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse School of Medicine, Morehouse students can cross-register for courses and participate in shared social and academic life across the four institutions, giving the small college access to a much larger combined community. Morehouse's role as one of the most prominent producers of Black male doctoral candidates and professionals in the country, combined with its direct historical connection to the civil rights movement through King and other prominent alumni, has made it one of the most nationally recognized HBCUs in the United States.
