Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2, released in 2004 and directed by Sam Raimi, is widely regarded by critics and fans as one of the finest superhero films ever made, praised particularly for its emotionally grounded depiction of Peter Parker's struggle to balance his personal life with his superhero responsibilities. The film's elevated train sequence, in which Spider-Man physically stops a runaway subway train using his own body and webbing, remains one of the most celebrated individual action sequences in superhero film history, combining genuine emotional stakes with technically impressive practical and digital effects work. Alfred Molina's performance as Doctor Octopus, a scientist whose mechanical arms gain a corrupting influence over his own mind and moral judgment, gave the film a genuinely sympathetic and tragic antagonist, distinguishing it from more straightforwardly villainous comic book adversaries in earlier superhero films. The film's willingness to have its protagonist genuinely give up his superhero identity for an extended stretch of the story, grappling seriously with the personal costs of his double life, gave Spider-Man 2 a psychological depth that helped establish higher storytelling expectations for the superhero genre more broadly in the years that followed.
VS
Black Panther
Black Panther, released in 2018, became the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, and its predominantly Black principal cast and its Afrofuturist depiction of the fictional, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda made it a significant cultural event well beyond typical superhero film discourse. The film's box office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in American history at the time of its release, directly demonstrated that a major studio blockbuster centered on Black characters and Black creative talent could achieve massive mainstream commercial success, challenging longstanding and often unstated industry assumptions to the contrary. Its antagonist, Erik Killmonger, presented a genuinely sympathetic ideological critique of Wakanda's historical isolationism and its failure to use its resources to support the broader African diaspora, giving the film a villain whose motivations carried real political and historical weight rather than simple megalomania. Star Chadwick Boseman's death from colon cancer in 2020, kept private from the public throughout his continued film work, added significant emotional weight to the film's legacy, and Black Panther's cultural and commercial impact established it as one of the most historically significant films in the broader superhero genre.
