St. John's College
St. John's College, founded in 1696, is one of the oldest colleges in the country, and its distinctive "Great Books" curriculum — in which every student follows the exact same four-year program built entirely around original primary texts from Homer to Einstein, with no traditional majors or elective courses — is unlike that of any other accredited American college. Classes at St. John's are conducted entirely through small, seminar-style discussions led by "tutors" rather than professors delivering lectures, and students read primary source texts directly rather than textbooks or secondary summaries, a structure the college considers central to its educational philosophy of direct engagement with original ideas. The college maintains a twin campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico, alongside its original Annapolis location, with students able to study at either or split their time between both campuses, though the curriculum itself remains identical and equally rigorous at both locations. St. John's small size and its uniquely rigid, universally shared curriculum have made it one of the most distinctive undergraduate institutions in the country, drawing a specific type of student deliberately seeking an entirely primary-text-based liberal arts education unlike anything offered at a conventional college.
VS
University of Maryland, College Park
The University of Maryland, College Park, founded in 1856, is the state's flagship public research university, and its proximity to Washington, DC gives students and faculty unusually direct access to federal agencies, national laboratories, and policy institutions clustered in the surrounding metropolitan area. The university's computer science and engineering programs have built particularly strong reputations, benefiting from research partnerships with NASA's nearby Goddard Space Flight Center and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, both located within a short drive of campus. Maryland's journalism school and its criminology and criminal justice programs, both consistently ranked among the best at any public university, draw directly on the school's proximity to national media outlets and federal law enforcement agencies headquartered in the DC area. The university's Terrapins athletic programs and its move from the ACC to the Big Ten conference in 2014 reflected the broader institutional ambition to raise Maryland's national athletic and academic profile, a shift that's coincided with continued strong federal research funding tied to the university's Washington-area location.
