St. John's College
St. John's College's Santa Fe campus, established in 1964 as a twin campus to the original Annapolis, Maryland location, follows the identical Great Books curriculum at both locations, letting students study, transfer between, or split their time across either the New Mexico desert or Chesapeake Bay setting. The college's curriculum remains built entirely around direct reading and small-group seminar discussion of primary source texts spanning from ancient Greek philosophy through modern science, with no traditional majors, textbooks, or elective courses offered at either campus. St. John's Santa Fe campus, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, gives the college's distinctive academic program an equally distinctive high-desert Southwest physical setting, different from its Maryland twin's more traditional colonial New England-adjacent campus environment. The college's combination of its uniquely rigorous, universally shared Great Books curriculum and its dramatic New Mexico mountain setting has made the Santa Fe campus a distinctive choice among students specifically seeking that particular primary-text-based liberal arts approach in a Southwest desert environment.

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, founded in 1889, is one of the most specialized and academically rigorous STEM-focused public universities in the country, with a curriculum concentrated almost entirely on engineering, geoscience, and applied physical sciences. The institute's Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, situated at high elevation in the nearby mountains, conducts significant lightning and severe weather research, and New Mexico Tech's proximity to White Sands Missile Range and other federal research facilities gives students direct access to significant defense and aerospace research partnerships. The university's petroleum and mining engineering programs reflect its founding-era mission, and New Mexico Tech's small size, extremely rigorous curriculum, and high research funding per student have made it one of the more academically demanding public universities in the country relative to its modest size. The institute's combination of its narrow, deeply technical curriculum and its direct access to significant federal research infrastructure has made New Mexico Tech a distinctive choice for students specifically committed to rigorous STEM education within a small public university setting.
