St. John's College
St. John's College's Santa Fe campus, established in 1964 as a twin campus to the original Annapolis, Maryland location, follows the identical Great Books curriculum at both locations, letting students study, transfer between, or split their time across either the New Mexico desert or Chesapeake Bay setting. The college's curriculum remains built entirely around direct reading and small-group seminar discussion of primary source texts spanning from ancient Greek philosophy through modern science, with no traditional majors, textbooks, or elective courses offered at either campus. St. John's Santa Fe campus, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, gives the college's distinctive academic program an equally distinctive high-desert Southwest physical setting, different from its Maryland twin's more traditional colonial New England-adjacent campus environment. The college's combination of its uniquely rigorous, universally shared Great Books curriculum and its dramatic New Mexico mountain setting has made the Santa Fe campus a distinctive choice among students specifically seeking that particular primary-text-based liberal arts approach in a Southwest desert environment.
VS
New Mexico State University
New Mexico State University, founded in 1888 as the state's land-grant institution, has built a strong agricultural and engineering research program, and its proximity to White Sands Missile Range and other significant federal aerospace and defense testing facilities gives engineering students direct access to nearby government research infrastructure. The university's Las Cruces campus, located in the state's agriculturally significant Mesilla Valley, supports NMSU's continued strength in irrigation science and arid-region agricultural research, reflecting the university's land-grant mission serving New Mexico's specific desert farming economy. NMSU's business and education programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution reflects New Mexico's significant Hispanic population and the university's role providing accessible higher education across that demographic. The university's combination of genuine land-grant agricultural research strength specific to arid farming conditions and its proximity to significant federal aerospace testing infrastructure has made NMSU a distinctive complement to the University of New Mexico within the state's public university system.
