St. Moritz, Switzerland
St. Moritz is widely credited with inventing winter tourism itself — in 1864, hotelier Johannes Badrutt reportedly wagered a group of British summer guests that they'd enjoy the Alpine winter just as much as summer, offering to cover their travel costs if they weren't satisfied, a bet he won decisively and one that's credited with launching the entire concept of a winter mountain vacation. The resort town has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948, making it one of only a handful of locations in the world to host the Winter Games more than once, and it remains one of the most consistently prestigious and expensive ski destinations in the entire Alps. St. Moritz has also built a significant identity beyond skiing itself, hosting winter sporting events on the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz, including polo matches and horse racing held directly on the ice, a genuinely unusual pairing of traditional equestrian sport with an Alpine ski resort setting. St. Moritz's combination of its foundational role in inventing winter tourism itself, hosting the Winter Olympics twice, and its unusual ice-based equestrian sporting culture has made it one of the most historically significant and enduringly prestigious ski destinations anywhere in the world.
VS
Chamonix, France
Chamonix hosted the first-ever Winter Olympics in 1924, a designation only formally recognized as the inaugural Winter Games retroactively, since the event was originally billed simply as "International Winter Sports Week" before the International Olympic Committee later designated it the first Winter Olympiad. The town sits directly at the base of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps and in Western Europe, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs nearly 9,000 vertical feet from the town to a high-altitude station offering direct views across the Mont Blanc massif, one of the most dramatic cable car ascents anywhere in the world. Chamonix has built a global reputation specifically as a center for extreme and off-piste skiing and mountaineering, including the famous Vallée Blanche off-piste run, a roughly 12-mile glacier descent requiring a mountain guide, that's drawn serious backcountry skiers from around the world for generations. Chamonix's combination of hosting the first Winter Olympics, its dramatic position beneath Mont Blanc, and its reputation as a global center for extreme off-piste skiing and mountaineering has made it one of the most historically foundational and adventure-focused ski destinations in the entire world.
