Stanford University
Stanford University was founded in 1885 by railroad magnate Leland Stanford and his wife Jane, as a memorial to their son, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at 15 — the founding grant explicitly declared "the children of California" the university's heirs, and undergraduate tuition was free for its first several decades. The university's proximity to Silicon Valley, a region it helped create — Hewlett-Packard was founded by two Stanford graduates in a garage a few blocks from campus in 1939 — has made it the academic center of gravity for the technology industry, with a startup and venture-funding culture woven directly into its computer science and engineering programs. Stanford's 8,180-acre campus is one of the largest in the country by area, and its research output spans nearly every field — the university's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and its medical school's research hospital both rank among the most significant research facilities of their kind in the world. The school's combination of elite academics, entrepreneurial culture, and a top-tier Division I athletics program — Stanford has won more NCAA team championships than any other university — gives it a breadth of institutional strength across research, business, and sports that few universities anywhere can match.
VS
UCLA
UCLA has grown from a small teacher's college founded in 1919 into one of the largest and most selective research universities in the country, now receiving well over 100,000 undergraduate applications a year, among the highest application volumes of any university in the United States. The school's athletic program has won more NCAA championships than nearly any other university, and its men's basketball program's run under coach John Wooden in the 1960s and '70s — 10 NCAA titles in 12 years, including a stretch of seven straight — remains one of the most dominant runs by any team in any American college sport. UCLA's film school and its location in Los Angeles have made it one of the primary academic pipelines into the entertainment industry, producing a long list of prominent directors, screenwriters, and studio executives, giving the university a direct institutional connection to Hollywood that few other schools can claim. As part of the University of California system, UCLA combines a large, comprehensive research university's breadth — strong programs across medicine, engineering, business, and the arts — with in-state tuition well below comparable private universities, a combination that's made it one of the most heavily applied-to schools in the country.
