Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorating the two nations' shared democratic ideals and the centennial of American independence. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper-clad figure, while Gustave Eiffel — a few years before his tower would make him famous in his own right — engineered the internal iron framework that lets the statue's thin copper skin flex slightly in the wind without cracking. Standing 305 feet from the base of the pedestal to the tip of the torch, the statue was the tallest structure of its kind in the world at the time of its dedication. Its copper surface, originally a bright reddish-brown, gradually oxidized over the following decades into the pale green patina now instantly recognizable worldwide — a chemical process rather than a paint job, and one that actually protects the copper underneath from further corrosion. The statue sits on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, reachable only by ferry, and for millions of immigrants arriving by ship through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was often the first American landmark they saw — a role that cemented its symbolic status well beyond its formal one as a French diplomatic gift. It was designated a National Monument in 1924 and remains one of the most recognized symbols of the United States anywhere in the world. For a New York City attractions list, the Statue of Liberty is the essential "the symbol itself" entry — a 305-foot French gift turned immigration-era icon, still standing on its own island in the harbor exactly where the first waves of newcomers once caught sight of it.
VS
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American businessmen, financiers, and artists who wanted to bring a world-class art institution to the United States, and it opened its doors the following year — not yet in its current Fifth Avenue building, which wouldn't open until 1880 and has been expanded repeatedly in the century and a half since. The Met's collection now spans more than two million works across 5,000 years of human history, from Egyptian antiquities and European Old Masters to American decorative arts and an entire reconstructed Temple of Dendur, an actual ancient Egyptian temple gifted to the United States and reassembled inside a dedicated wing overlooking Central Park. The museum's "pay what you wish" admission policy for New York State residents, a holdover from its founding mission to make world-class art broadly accessible, has made it one of the more debated but enduringly popular admission structures among major American museums, and its annual Met Gala, held in the museum's Costume Institute, has become one of the most closely watched events in global fashion. For a New York City attractions list, the Met is the essential "a lifetime, not an afternoon" entry — a 150-plus-year-old institution holding more than two million objects across five millennia, anchored on Fifth Avenue directly across from Central Park.
