Stephen Hendry
Stephen Hendry won the World Snooker Championship seven times between 1990 and 1999, a run of dominance across a single decade that included five consecutive titles from 1992 to 1996, a streak of sustained championship success that redefined what was thought possible in the modern professional game. Hendry became the youngest World Champion in snooker history in 1990, at 21, and his aggressive, attacking break-building style — taking on difficult long-distance pots that more conservative players of earlier eras would have avoided — fundamentally changed how top players approached break construction going forward. His total of 775 competitive century breaks remained the record for years, and Hendry's combination of technical precision and a willingness to attack difficult positions rather than play safety shots set the template that most top modern players, including Ronnie O'Sullivan, have built their own attacking games around. Hendry's rivalry with fellow Scot John Higgins and English players Steve Davis and Jimmy White through the 1990s helped drive some of the sport's highest UK television ratings, and his seven world titles remained the modern-era benchmark until O'Sullivan finally matched the total more than two decades after Hendry's own dominant run had ended.
VS
Mark Williams
Mark Williams won the World Snooker Championship three times, in 2000, 2003, and a surprise return to the title in 2018 at 43, a 15-year gap between his second and third titles that made him, at the time, one of the oldest world champions in the sport's modern history. Williams's relaxed, unassuming personality and his willingness to publicly joke about his own weight and fitness level, in a sport that increasingly emphasizes players' physical conditioning, made him a fan favorite whose 2018 comeback title was celebrated as much for its improbability as for the quality of snooker he played to achieve it. His technical strength lies particularly in break-building under pressure, and Williams's ability to construct large breaks even in tense, high-stakes final-frame situations has been cited by fellow players as among the calmest under pressure of his generation. Williams's rivalry with fellow Welsh player Matthew Stevens, and his part in Wales's strong overall representation at the top of professional snooker during the 2000s, made him one of the sport's most significant non-English or Scottish champions, and his 18-year gap between first and third world titles remains one of the longest championship spans in snooker history.
