Stephen Hendry
Stephen Hendry won the World Snooker Championship seven times between 1990 and 1999, a run of dominance across a single decade that included five consecutive titles from 1992 to 1996, a streak of sustained championship success that redefined what was thought possible in the modern professional game. Hendry became the youngest World Champion in snooker history in 1990, at 21, and his aggressive, attacking break-building style — taking on difficult long-distance pots that more conservative players of earlier eras would have avoided — fundamentally changed how top players approached break construction going forward. His total of 775 competitive century breaks remained the record for years, and Hendry's combination of technical precision and a willingness to attack difficult positions rather than play safety shots set the template that most top modern players, including Ronnie O'Sullivan, have built their own attacking games around. Hendry's rivalry with fellow Scot John Higgins and English players Steve Davis and Jimmy White through the 1990s helped drive some of the sport's highest UK television ratings, and his seven world titles remained the modern-era benchmark until O'Sullivan finally matched the total more than two decades after Hendry's own dominant run had ended.
VS
Ronnie O'Sullivan
Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the World Snooker Championship seven times, tying Stephen Hendry's modern-era record, across a career that's spanned more than three decades, from his first professional century break as a teenager in the early 1990s to continued top-level competitiveness into his late forties. Nicknamed "The Rocket" for his exceptional playing speed, O'Sullivan holds the record for the fastest official maximum break in professional snooker history — a perfect 147 break completed in just five minutes and eight seconds at the 1997 World Championship, a level of speed combined with precision that remains unmatched. O'Sullivan's combination of natural ambidexterity, allowing him to play difficult shots left-handed when needed without the accuracy typically lost in that switch, and a fluid, instinctive playing style have made him widely regarded as the most naturally talented player the sport has ever produced, even by rivals who've beaten him in individual matches. His public struggles with anxiety and depression, which he's discussed openly throughout his career, along with periodic threats to retire and occasional conflicts with the sport's governing body, have made O'Sullivan one of snooker's most compelling and unpredictable figures, and his continued dominance well into his forties has extended a career many expected to peak decades earlier.
