Steve Davis
Steve Davis won the World Snooker Championship six times during the 1980s, becoming the first player to dominate the sport during the decade snooker's television popularity exploded in the UK, with the 1985 World Championship final against Dennis Taylor drawing a peak UK television audience of more than 18 million viewers, still a record for any British television broadcast after midnight. Davis's calm, methodical, safety-first playing style, in an era before the more aggressive attacking approach Stephen Hendry later popularized, earned him the nickname "Steady Eddie" among fans, reflecting a reputation for grinding out victories through consistency and tactical patience rather than flair. His business partnership with manager Barry Hearn helped transform snooker into a genuinely lucrative professional sport during the 1980s boom, and Davis became one of the first snooker players to build significant wealth and mainstream celebrity from the game, at a time when the sport's commercial infrastructure was still developing. Davis's continued competitive appearances well into his fifties, including a surprise run to the 2010 World Championship quarterfinals at age 52 against a field of much younger players, extended his public relevance decades past his playing peak, and he later became one of the sport's most respected television commentators.
VS
Mark Williams
Mark Williams won the World Snooker Championship three times, in 2000, 2003, and a surprise return to the title in 2018 at 43, a 15-year gap between his second and third titles that made him, at the time, one of the oldest world champions in the sport's modern history. Williams's relaxed, unassuming personality and his willingness to publicly joke about his own weight and fitness level, in a sport that increasingly emphasizes players' physical conditioning, made him a fan favorite whose 2018 comeback title was celebrated as much for its improbability as for the quality of snooker he played to achieve it. His technical strength lies particularly in break-building under pressure, and Williams's ability to construct large breaks even in tense, high-stakes final-frame situations has been cited by fellow players as among the calmest under pressure of his generation. Williams's rivalry with fellow Welsh player Matthew Stevens, and his part in Wales's strong overall representation at the top of professional snooker during the 2000s, made him one of the sport's most significant non-English or Scottish champions, and his 18-year gap between first and third world titles remains one of the longest championship spans in snooker history.
