Sunrise
Sunrise was founded in 1972 by former Mushi Production animators, and the studio became the definitive home of the "Gundam" franchise, launching the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" series in 1979, which established the "real robot" mecha anime subgenre emphasizing grounded, militarily plausible robot combat over the more fantastical "super robot" style that had previously dominated the genre. Gundam grew into one of the most commercially significant media franchises in Japan, extending well beyond television into an enormous model kit (Gunpla) industry that has generated billions of dollars in sales over the franchise's more than four-decade history. Sunrise's other significant productions include "Cowboy Bebop," which became particularly influential internationally for introducing many Western audiences to anime through its jazz-influenced soundtrack and genre-blending science-fiction noir storytelling during its notable early-2000s American television broadcast. Sunrise's combination of its foundational role establishing the "real robot" mecha genre through Gundam and its internationally influential "Cowboy Bebop" has made it one of the most historically significant anime studios in the medium's history.
VS
Madhouse
Madhouse was founded in 1972 by a group of animators who had previously worked at Mushi Production, the studio founded by "godfather of anime" Osamu Tezuka, giving Madhouse a direct professional lineage tracing back to some of anime's earliest formative production houses. The studio built a reputation for producing critically acclaimed, artistically ambitious anime films and series across a wide range of genres and visual styles, including Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue" and "Paprika," which became internationally significant for their psychologically complex, visually inventive storytelling. Madhouse has also produced numerous long-running and internationally popular television series, including "Death Note" and "One-Punch Man," demonstrating the studio's ability to balance both prestige theatrical film projects and commercially successful ongoing television productions. Madhouse's combination of its direct lineage from Osamu Tezuka's foundational Mushi Production and its sustained critical acclaim across both film and television has made it one of the most artistically respected anime studios in the industry.
