Superman
Superman, released in 1978 and directed by Richard Donner, was marketed with the tagline "You'll believe a man can fly," reflecting the film's then-groundbreaking visual effects work that made its flying sequences appear genuinely seamless and convincing for the first time in any big-budget superhero film. Christopher Reeve's dual performance as both the confident Superman and the deliberately clumsy, mild-mannered Clark Kent established the definitive screen template for portraying the character's two distinct public identities, and Reeve's performance remains the version most subsequent screen Supermen are measured against. The film's earnest, sincerely heroic tone, treating Superman's moral idealism without the ironic distance or grounded cynicism later superhero films sometimes adopted, reflected director Donner's deliberate approach of taking the character's mythology completely seriously rather than as inherently campy source material. Superman's massive commercial success helped establish the modern big-budget superhero blockbuster as a viable, sustained film genre rather than an occasional novelty, and its combination of genuine visual innovation and Reeve's iconic dual performance made it the foundational template that subsequent superhero films built directly upon.

Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, concluded an interconnected 22-film, 11-year storyline across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its opening weekend box office broke numerous industry records, eventually making it briefly the highest-grossing film in history before Avatar's later re-release reclaimed the record. The film's three-hour runtime, unusually long for a mainstream blockbuster, reflected the scale of narrative closure the filmmakers needed to provide across a storyline that had built continuously across more than a decade of previous interconnected films, an unprecedented structural undertaking in film history. Its climactic battle sequence, bringing together nearly every major character from the preceding decade of Marvel films for a single unified confrontation, represented one of the largest-scale ensemble action sequences ever assembled for a single film, requiring extensive coordination across dozens of previously separate character storylines. Endgame's emotional payoffs for character arcs built across more than a decade of prior films gave the movie a genuine sense of culmination that few sequels or franchise films have achieved at that scale, and its massive commercial success confirmed the viability of Marvel's unprecedented long-term shared-universe storytelling strategy.
