Svetlana Romashina
Svetlana Romashina won seven Olympic gold medals in artistic (formerly synchronized) swimming across four Games from 2008 to 2020, making her the most decorated Olympic artistic swimmer in the sport's history and one of the most decorated female Olympians across any sport. Her sustained dominance across more than a decade, competing in both duet and team events throughout that span, reflected an exceptional combination of technical precision, breath control, and artistic performance quality that defined Russia's continued dominance of the discipline. Romashina's role as team captain during Russia's continued sweep of major artistic swimming titles throughout the 2010s made her the sport's central figure during one of the most one-sided extended dominance stretches by a single national program in any Olympic discipline. Her combination of seven Olympic gold medals and her sustained multi-Games leadership of Russia's dominant program has made Romashina almost universally regarded as the greatest artistic swimmer in Olympic history.
VS
Bill May
Bill May became the most prominent male competitor in artistic swimming's history, pursuing a sport that had been effectively closed to men at the Olympic level for decades, and he became instrumental in eventually opening mixed duet competition to international recognition. His technical skill matched or exceeded that of his female competitors throughout a career spanning multiple decades, and his advocacy helped drive the eventual addition of mixed duet events to major international competitions, including artistic swimming's Olympic debut for men at the 2024 Paris Games. May's persistence through years of a sport that offered him no formal international competitive pathway for much of his career, before mixed events were finally recognized, reflected a level of dedication to the discipline that ultimately reshaped its competitive structure for future male swimmers. His combination of his sustained technical excellence and his singular role opening artistic swimming to male Olympic competition has made May one of the most historically significant figures in the sport, regardless of gender.
