Svetlana Romashina
Svetlana Romashina won seven Olympic gold medals in artistic (formerly synchronized) swimming across four Games from 2008 to 2020, making her the most decorated Olympic artistic swimmer in the sport's history and one of the most decorated female Olympians across any sport. Her sustained dominance across more than a decade, competing in both duet and team events throughout that span, reflected an exceptional combination of technical precision, breath control, and artistic performance quality that defined Russia's continued dominance of the discipline. Romashina's role as team captain during Russia's continued sweep of major artistic swimming titles throughout the 2010s made her the sport's central figure during one of the most one-sided extended dominance stretches by a single national program in any Olympic discipline. Her combination of seven Olympic gold medals and her sustained multi-Games leadership of Russia's dominant program has made Romashina almost universally regarded as the greatest artistic swimmer in Olympic history.
VS
Natalia Ishchenko
Natalia Ishchenko won more World Championship gold medals than any other artistic swimmer in history, pairing with Svetlana Romashina in the duet event to form one of the most dominant partnerships the sport has ever produced across the 2000s and 2010s. Her exceptional flexibility and technical execution in the sport's most demanding lift and formation elements made her a defining figure of Russia's technical style, which set the choreographic and athletic standard other national programs spent years trying to match. Ishchenko's continued involvement in the sport after her competitive retirement, including choreography and coaching work, extended her influence on artistic swimming's technical and artistic direction well beyond her own competitive career. Her combination of an unmatched World Championship gold medal total and her foundational duet partnership with Romashina has made Ishchenko one of the most statistically dominant artistic swimmers ever to compete.
