Tacombi
Tacombi's origin story starts with an actual Volkswagen bus in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where the founders ran a taco stand out of the vehicle before deciding to bring the same format to New York. That beach-cart-turned-taqueria origin has stayed part of the brand's identity ever since — the Nolita location still leans into a bright, beachy, unmistakably Mexican-resort-town aesthetic that stands out against the more austere design language most New York restaurants default to. The menu sticks to a genuinely traditional Mexican taco format — small corn tortillas, simple, well-executed fillings, fresh salsas — built around the philosophy that a taco doesn't need reinvention if the fundamentals are done properly. That restraint has helped Tacombi build a following well beyond the novelty of its origin story, since the food itself has had to hold up on its own merits for well over a decade now. Nolita's density of well-regarded, design-forward restaurants makes it a genuinely competitive spot to sustain a following, and Tacombi has done it by staying recognizable — the same VW-bus-inspired identity, the same commitment to a traditional taco format — rather than chasing whatever trend happens to be dominating New York food media in a given year. From that original Nolita location, Tacombi has expanded to multiple New York locations and beyond, but it's the original that still carries the clearest thread back to that first taco stand on a Mexican beach.
VS
El Atoradero
El Atoradero has built a following in Bushwick around a menu that goes deeper into regional Mexican cooking than the taco-and-burrito format most New Yorkers default to — barbacoa, consommé, and a rotating set of specials that draw specifically on Mexico City and central Mexican street-food traditions rather than a generalized, flattened version of "Mexican food." That specificity has made it a genuine word-of-mouth destination within Brooklyn's food-obsessive community, the kind of restaurant recommended less through official reviews and more through people who've eaten their way through the city's Mexican food scene and consider this one of the more serious, less compromised entries in it. Bushwick's own food identity has shifted considerably over the past decade, with a wave of ambitious, chef-driven restaurants opening alongside the neighborhood's long-established immigrant-run businesses, and El Atoradero sits at a genuine intersection of both — food built on real regional Mexican tradition, served in a setting that fits comfortably into the neighborhood's newer restaurant scene without abandoning that tradition to do it. For a New York taco list, El Atoradero is the entry for anyone who's already worked through the more famous names and wants a menu built around a wider, more specific slice of Mexican regional cooking than tacos alone.
