Taeko Ohnuki
Taeko Ohnuki became one of city pop's most artistically ambitious figures, incorporating jazz, bossa nova, and experimental pop influences into a catalog that distinguished her from more straightforwardly commercial genre contemporaries throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Her 1977 album "Sunshower," produced with jazz-influenced arrangements uncommon in mainstream Japanese pop at the time, has been increasingly recognized by international critics and collectors as one of city pop's most artistically significant and influential early recordings. Ohnuki's background as a former member of the influential Japanese pop group Sugar Babe, alongside Tatsuro Yamashita, connected her directly to city pop's foundational late-1970s development before she launched her own distinct and more experimentally minded solo career. Her combination of "Sunshower's" critically rediscovered artistic significance and her foundational connection to the genre's earliest scene has made Ohnuki one of the most artistically respected figures in city pop's history.
VS
Casiopea
Casiopea became one of city pop's most significant instrumental acts, blending jazz fusion with the genre's smooth, technically polished production values across a prolific catalog beginning with their 1979 self-titled debut album. Their instrumental, guitar-and-keyboard-driven sound, distinct from the vocal-pop mainstream most closely associated with city pop, demonstrated the genre's broader stylistic range and its close overlap with Japan's parallel jazz fusion scene during the same period. The band's technical musicianship, particularly guitarist Issei Noro's fusion-influenced playing, earned them a devoted international following among instrumental music and fusion enthusiasts well beyond city pop's more typically vocal-pop-focused fan base. Their combination of their genre-crossing instrumental sound and their technically accomplished musicianship has made Casiopea one of the most distinctive and internationally respected acts associated with city pop's broader musical scene.
