Tarrytown, NY
Tarrytown sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in Westchester County, directly adjacent to Sleepy Hollow — the setting, along with Tarrytown itself, of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," one of the earliest and most enduringly influential works of American fiction. Irving himself lived nearby at Sunnyside, his riverfront estate, for the last several decades of his life, and the property has been preserved as a museum operated by Historic Hudson Valley, giving Tarrytown a direct, physical connection to one of the foundational figures of American literature that few other Hudson Valley towns can claim. The area's historic estate district extends well beyond Sunnyside — Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival mansion overlooking the river just south of the village, and Kykuit, the Rockefeller family estate a short distance north, both draw visitors to the immediate area and reinforce Tarrytown's identity as a genuine historic and cultural destination rather than a purely residential commuter town. Metro-North's Hudson Line connects Tarrytown to Grand Central in roughly 40 to 45 minutes, and the village's restored Tarrytown Music Hall, an 1885 opera house that still hosts concerts and film screenings, anchors a downtown that's leaned into the area's historic character as a genuine draw alongside its river views and rail commute.
VS
Chappaqua, NY
Chappaqua, a hamlet within the town of New Castle in northern Westchester County, became one of the most widely recognized suburb names in the country after Bill and Hillary Clinton purchased a home there in 1999, shortly before Hillary Clinton's first US Senate campaign — a purchase that was itself widely covered specifically because sitting presidents have rarely bought a private home mid-administration, let alone one in a small Westchester hamlet. The area's rolling, wooded terrain and larger residential lot sizes give it a more rural, horse-country feel than the denser villages closer to the city line, a character that's been part of Chappaqua's appeal for well-off Manhattan commuters willing to trade a longer rail ride for more space and privacy. Metro-North's Harlem Line connects Chappaqua to Grand Central in a little over an hour, a meaningfully longer commute than closer-in Westchester towns like Bronxville or Scarsdale, reflecting Chappaqua's position further north along the line and its correspondingly lower density and larger property sizes. The New Castle school district, serving Chappaqua, consistently ranks among the top public school systems in New York State, and that reputation, combined with the area's larger lots and the enduring name recognition from its most famous residents, has kept Chappaqua one of the most sought-after addresses in northern Westchester County.
