Tatsuro Yamashita
Tatsuro Yamashita became the most influential figure in city pop's development, combining American funk, soul, and yacht rock influences with meticulous studio production to define the genre's smooth, urban-sophisticated sound throughout Japan's economically booming late 1970s and 1980s. His 1980 album "Ride on Time" and its title track became one of city pop's most recognizable and commercially successful releases, its sound closely tied to a Japanese television commercial campaign that helped cement the song's status as a defining cultural touchstone of the era. Yamashita's meticulous, perfectionist studio approach, incorporating top session musicians and painstaking production techniques, established a technical benchmark for audio quality within Japanese pop music that directly shaped how subsequent city pop artists approached their own recordings. His combination of "Ride on Time's" landmark cultural impact and his foundational role defining the genre's sound has made Yamashita almost universally regarded as the single most important artist in city pop's history.
VS
Toshiki Kadomatsu
Toshiki Kadomatsu built a significant city pop catalog throughout the 1980s that leaned more heavily into funk and R&B influences than some genre contemporaries, incorporating his own guitar work into productions that distinguished his sound within the broader city pop scene. His 1981 debut album "Sea Breeze" set the tone for his career-long thematic focus on breezy, ocean-adjacent imagery, a common city pop lyrical motif that Kadomatsu embraced particularly consistently across his subsequent catalog throughout the decade. Kadomatsu's guitar-forward, funk-influenced production style gave his recordings a slightly different textural identity than the more orchestral or synth-heavy approaches some contemporaries favored, reflecting the genre's genuine stylistic range beneath its broadly shared smooth aesthetic. His combination of his funk-influenced production style and his sustained thematic focus on the genre's signature breezy imagery has made Kadomatsu one of the most distinctive artists within city pop's original 1980s scene.
