Teddy Riner
Teddy Riner is the most decorated judoka in the sport's history, having won Olympic gold medals across three separate Games and a record 11 World Championship titles, establishing a level of sustained dominance in the men's heavyweight division that no other judoka has approached. His combined competitive winning streak, spanning more than a decade without a single loss at one point during his prime, remains one of the longest unbeaten runs across any individual combat sport, and Riner's dominance in heavyweight judo has been so complete that opponents have openly discussed the psychological difficulty of even attempting to compete against him. Riner's massive frame, standing 6-foot-8, combined with technical skill more typically associated with lighter, faster competitors, gave him a rare combination of physical power and genuine technical refinement that distinguished him from heavyweight judokas who typically rely primarily on strength alone. His sustained excellence across three Olympic cycles and his record World Championship total have made Riner the individual most universally cited as the greatest judoka in the sport's history, and his continued competitiveness well into his thirties reflects remarkable longevity for a heavyweight combat athlete.
VS
Kayla Harrison
Kayla Harrison became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in judo, at the 2012 London Games, and she successfully defended her title at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first American judoka, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic golds in the sport. Harrison has spoken openly about surviving sexual abuse by a former coach during her teenage years, and her decision to publicly share that experience, along with her subsequent Olympic success, made her an influential advocate for other survivors of sexual abuse in sports, particularly within the Olympic training system. Her combination of American judo's historically limited international success and her own back-to-back Olympic gold medals made Harrison one of the most significant figures in the sport's relatively brief history of major American success, establishing judo as a genuine gold-medal opportunity for American athletes in a way it hadn't previously been. Harrison later transitioned to mixed martial arts, becoming a champion in professional MMA promotions, extending her combat sports success into an entirely different competitive discipline following her judo retirement, and her combined judo and MMA achievements have made her one of the most accomplished American combat sports athletes across multiple disciplines.
