Terry Gross
Terry Gross has hosted the public radio interview program "Fresh Air" since 1975, later nationally syndicated starting in 1987, and her decades-long body of interviews with authors, actors, musicians, and public figures made her one of the most respected long-form interviewers in American broadcasting history. Gross's meticulously researched, deeply prepared interview style, often drawing out unusually candid and reflective responses from guests across a career spanning nearly five decades, became a widely cited model for serious long-form interview journalism well before the podcast medium existed. "Fresh Air" transitioned successfully into podcast distribution, introducing Gross's decades-established interviewing approach to new generations of listeners who discovered her work through podcast platforms rather than traditional radio broadcast. Terry Gross's combination of her nearly five-decade career as a rigorously prepared long-form interviewer and her show's successful transition to the podcast era has made her one of the most respected and enduringly influential interviewers in American media history.
VS
Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons launched "The Bill Simmons Podcast" in 2007 while working at ESPN, building it around long-form sports and pop culture conversation, and he later left ESPN in 2015 to found The Ringer, a sports and pop culture media company built substantially around a growing network of podcasts. Simmons's approach, blending detailed sports analysis with pop culture references and a distinctly conversational, unscripted tone, helped establish sports podcasting as a commercially significant category distinct from traditional sports radio and television commentary. Spotify's 2020 acquisition of The Ringer for a reported $196 million demonstrated the commercial value major platforms placed on established podcast networks with loyal audiences, and the deal became one of the more significant media acquisitions in the broader consolidation of the podcast industry. Bill Simmons's combination of his pioneering sports-and-culture podcast format and his historically significant sale of The Ringer to Spotify has made him one of the most commercially influential figures in modern sports media and podcasting.
