Terry Gross
Terry Gross has hosted the public radio interview program "Fresh Air" since 1975, later nationally syndicated starting in 1987, and her decades-long body of interviews with authors, actors, musicians, and public figures made her one of the most respected long-form interviewers in American broadcasting history. Gross's meticulously researched, deeply prepared interview style, often drawing out unusually candid and reflective responses from guests across a career spanning nearly five decades, became a widely cited model for serious long-form interview journalism well before the podcast medium existed. "Fresh Air" transitioned successfully into podcast distribution, introducing Gross's decades-established interviewing approach to new generations of listeners who discovered her work through podcast platforms rather than traditional radio broadcast. Terry Gross's combination of her nearly five-decade career as a rigorously prepared long-form interviewer and her show's successful transition to the podcast era has made her one of the most respected and enduringly influential interviewers in American media history.
VS
Ira Glass
Ira Glass created and has hosted "This American Life" since its 1995 launch on public radio, and the show's specific narrative, theme-based storytelling format became one of the most influential structural templates in the entire history of audio journalism and documentary storytelling. Glass and his production team's rigorous, meticulously edited approach to constructing emotionally resonant true stories from ordinary people's lives directly influenced and helped train many of the producers who went on to create some of the most acclaimed narrative podcasts of the 2010s podcast boom, including "Serial." "This American Life" transitioned into podcast distribution relatively early and became one of the most consistently downloaded podcasts for years, demonstrating that a public radio show's specific long-form narrative journalism format could translate directly and successfully into the emerging podcast medium. Ira Glass's combination of his pioneering narrative radio storytelling format and his direct influence training the producers behind the modern narrative podcast boom has made him one of the most foundationally influential figures in podcasting history.
