Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 launched in 2017 as the company's first genuinely mass-market vehicle, and among its most consequential engineering decisions was a body structure built around a low center of gravity — the result of mounting a large, heavy battery pack flat along the floor of the vehicle — which meaningfully reduces rollover risk compared with a conventionally packaged gasoline sedan of similar size. That low center of gravity, combined with a rigid structure built specifically around battery-pack protection, helped the Model 3 earn some of the highest crash-test scores ever recorded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the time of its release, and it has repeatedly earned the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ designation across subsequent model years. Tesla's Autopilot and, in more advanced form, Full Self-Driving software have been central to the car's public safety narrative and also its most publicly contested feature — Tesla's own vehicle safety reports have repeatedly claimed lower accident rates for cars using Autopilot versus those without it, while regulators, safety researchers, and federal investigators have raised separate, serious concerns about driver overreliance on the system and a number of high-profile crashes linked to its use, an unresolved tension that continues to shape public debate about the technology. Built at Tesla's Fremont Factory in California — a former joint General Motors–Toyota plant Tesla acquired in 2010 — the Model 3's structural crash-test performance stands as a genuinely strong, independently verified safety credential even as the broader debate over its driver-assistance software's real-world safety record remains actively contested among regulators and researchers.
VS
Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback launched in 1994 as a raised, all-wheel-drive version of the Legacy wagon, aimed squarely at buyers who wanted genuine foul-weather capability without stepping up to a full-size SUV — and standard all-wheel drive across the entire model line, rather than as an expensive option, became the feature most responsible for its decades-long reputation as one of the more inherently stable, controllable vehicles in poor conditions. That reputation has been consistently reinforced by independent testing: the Outback has repeatedly earned the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ rating, the organization's highest designation, across multiple consecutive model years, and Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance suite — using stereo cameras rather than radar for features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control — has posted some of the strongest real-world crash-reduction statistics of any comparable system in independent insurance-industry studies. Consumer Reports and other independent outlets have repeatedly cited the Outback's combination of consistently high reliability scores and consistently high safety-test performance as an unusually rare pairing — many vehicles that test well for crash safety don't also post class-leading dependability numbers over a decade of ownership, but the Outback has managed both simultaneously across successive generations. Built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, the Outback's specific combination of standard all-wheel drive, consistently top-tier crash-test results, and a driver-assistance system with genuinely strong real-world outcomes data has made it one of the most consistently recommended "safe car" picks by independent safety researchers for the better part of three decades.
