Texas A&M University
Texas A&M, founded in 1876 as the state's first public institution of higher education, operates the Corps of Cadets, one of the largest uniformed student bodies outside the US service academies, a tradition dating back to the university's origins as a military and agricultural college under the Morrill Land-Grant Act. The university's distinctive traditions — including Silver Taps, a solemn campus-wide ceremony honoring students who've died, and the "12th Man" tradition, where the student body stands throughout football games as a sign of readiness to support the team — give A&M a campus culture built around communal identity and school spirit that's frequently cited as among the strongest of any large public university. A&M's enrollment of more than 70,000 students makes it one of the largest universities in the country by a wide margin, and its engineering, agriculture, and veterinary medicine programs are consistently ranked among the best in their fields nationally, reflecting the school's land-grant mission of applied, practical research. The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located on A&M's campus, a reflection of the university's close historical ties to Texas's political establishment, and its massive, deeply loyal alumni network — the "Aggie Network" — is frequently cited as one of the most active and career-supportive in American higher education.
VS
Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University, founded in 1911, has built a reputation as one of Texas's leading private universities, with a Dallas campus location that gives its Cox School of Business unusually direct access to the city's concentration of Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and finance industry employers. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum sits on SMU's campus, a high-profile addition that brought national attention and academic programming tied to presidential history and public policy directly onto the university's grounds. SMU's business, law, and arts programs have each built strong regional and national reputations, and the university's relatively small size compared to the state's massive public flagships gives it a more personalized undergraduate experience while still maintaining access to a major metropolitan area's internship and career opportunities. The university's Mustangs athletic program has a storied, complicated history — including the NCAA's unprecedented 1987 "death penalty," which shut down the football program entirely for a season over recruiting violations — a scandal SMU has spent decades rebuilding its athletic reputation from, most recently through its move into the Atlantic Coast Conference.
