Texas Christian University
Texas Christian University, founded in 1873 by brothers Addison and Randolph Clark, has grown from a small Fort Worth college into one of the state's most recognized private universities, with a business school — the Neeley School of Business — that draws heavily on the Dallas-Fort Worth area's corporate and finance job market. TCU's Horned Frogs football program's 2010 undefeated season and Rose Bowl win, followed by a run to the 2022 College Football Playoff national championship game, brought the university a level of national athletic visibility that had historically eluded it relative to the state's larger public programs. The university's relatively small enrollment, around 12,000 students, lets it offer smaller class sizes and more individualized attention than Texas's massive public flagships, a trade-off the school markets directly to prospective students weighing TCU against bigger, less personal in-state alternatives. TCU's historical affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) gives it a faith-rooted identity similar to Baylor's, though generally described as less doctrinally strict, and its combination of a growing academic reputation and recent athletic success has made it one of the fastest-rising private universities in the state.
VS
Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University, founded in 1911, has built a reputation as one of Texas's leading private universities, with a Dallas campus location that gives its Cox School of Business unusually direct access to the city's concentration of Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and finance industry employers. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum sits on SMU's campus, a high-profile addition that brought national attention and academic programming tied to presidential history and public policy directly onto the university's grounds. SMU's business, law, and arts programs have each built strong regional and national reputations, and the university's relatively small size compared to the state's massive public flagships gives it a more personalized undergraduate experience while still maintaining access to a major metropolitan area's internship and career opportunities. The university's Mustangs athletic program has a storied, complicated history — including the NCAA's unprecedented 1987 "death penalty," which shut down the football program entirely for a season over recruiting violations — a scandal SMU has spent decades rebuilding its athletic reputation from, most recently through its move into the Atlantic Coast Conference.
