The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999, is widely credited as the film that established found footage horror as a viable mainstream commercial genre, presenting itself as recovered footage from three student filmmakers who disappeared while investigating a local Maryland legend. Its groundbreaking marketing campaign, which deliberately blurred the line between the film's fictional premise and reality through a viral website and promotional materials suggesting the footage might be genuine, became one of the most studied and influential film marketing strategies in movie history, particularly given its use of the still relatively new internet as a promotional tool. Made on an extraordinarily modest budget of roughly $60,000, the film's massive commercial success, grossing nearly $250 million worldwide, made it one of the most profitable films relative to its budget in cinema history. The Blair Witch Project's raw, deliberately amateurish handheld camera style and its reliance on suggested rather than depicted horror established the core found footage conventions that virtually every subsequent film in the genre has continued to draw from.
VS
Paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity, released in 2007 on a reported budget of just $15,000, became one of the most profitable films relative to its production cost in film history, following a couple whose home becomes increasingly plagued by an unseen malevolent presence captured on a stationary home security camera. Its minimalist approach, relying almost entirely on static, unedited nighttime security footage of the couple's bedroom to build dread through small, incremental changes rather than conventional jump scares, established a distinctive stylistic approach within the found footage genre. The film's grassroots marketing strategy, including a "demand it" campaign letting audiences vote for the film to open in their city based on ticket demand, reflected an innovative distribution approach that helped build significant word-of-mouth momentum before its wide theatrical release. Paranormal Activity's massive commercial success launched a lengthy franchise of sequels and helped cement found footage as a commercially reliable low-budget horror format throughout the following decade, demonstrating the genre's continued viability more than eight years after The Blair Witch Project's original breakthrough.
