The Citadel
The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a senior military college whose undergraduate cadets follow a full military training and leadership program alongside traditional academic coursework, a structure similar to the federal service academies but operated as a state-supported institution rather than a fully federal one. The college's 1995 admission of its first female cadet, Shannon Faulkner, followed a lengthy and highly publicized legal battle over the school's previously all-male admissions policy, and her admission, along with subsequent female cadets, marked a significant and closely watched moment in the broader national conversation about gender integration at historically single-sex military institutions. Graduates commission as officers in any branch of the US military or pursue civilian careers, and The Citadel's leadership-focused curriculum and demanding physical and disciplinary requirements have built a reputation for producing graduates who go on to significant leadership roles across military, business, and public service careers. The college's historic Charleston campus, combined with its distinctive military college structure and its significant, closely followed history around gender integration, has made The Citadel one of the most institutionally distinctive colleges in South Carolina and one of only a small handful of senior military colleges remaining in the country.
VS
College of Charleston
The College of Charleston, founded in 1770, is among the oldest colleges in the country, and its campus, integrated directly into Charleston's historic downtown district, gives students a genuinely unique setting among American public universities, surrounded by centuries-old architecture within one of the country's most historically significant cities. The college's marine biology program benefits directly from Charleston's coastal location, and the school's business and arts management programs have built solid regional reputations, reflecting the college's broader academic growth beyond its historical roots as a small liberal arts institution. CofC's historic campus, featuring numerous antebellum-era buildings integrated into the working city around it, has made the college one of the most frequently cited "beautiful campus" honorees among American universities, an aesthetic distinction tied directly to its genuine historic preservation. The college's combination of a rare, centuries-old urban historic campus and its growing academic programs in marine science and business has made College of Charleston a distinctive choice among South Carolina's public universities, particularly for students drawn to its unusual historic downtown setting.
