The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight, released in 2008 and directed by Christopher Nolan, treated its comic book source material with a level of grounded, morally complex seriousness that significantly reshaped mainstream expectations for what a superhero film could be, moving the genre well beyond its earlier, more straightforwardly campy conventions. Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, delivered with an unpredictable, anarchic intensity, won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor after Ledger's death earlier in 2008, becoming one of only a small handful of major awards ever given to a performance in a superhero film. The film's snub from the Academy Awards' Best Picture category, despite widespread critical acclaim and its massive commercial success, is widely credited with directly prompting the Academy's subsequent decision to expand the Best Picture nominee field from five films to as many as 10, a structural change intended partly to accommodate genuinely acclaimed popular blockbusters. The Dark Knight's morally ambiguous exploration of vigilantism, terrorism, and institutional corruption, filtered through a genuinely dark and philosophically substantive script, established the template for the more serious, prestige-adjacent superhero filmmaking that numerous subsequent studios have attempted to replicate.
VS
Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman, released in 2017 and directed by Patty Jenkins, became the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman at the time of its release, and its box office and critical success demonstrated that a female-led superhero film could achieve major mainstream commercial success despite persistent industry skepticism about the genre's viability with a woman as its central hero. Gal Gadot's performance in the title role, combined with the film's World War I setting depicting Diana Prince's first encounters with human warfare and moral complexity, gave the character a genuinely earnest, idealistic heroism that distinguished the film from some of its contemporaries' more cynical or grim tonal approaches. The film's "No Man's Land" battlefield sequence, in which Diana single-handedly crosses an active combat zone to protect civilians while deflecting incoming gunfire with her bracelets and shield, became one of the most widely celebrated individual action sequences in modern superhero filmmaking. Wonder Woman's success came after decades of the character's prior absence from a solo feature film despite being one of DC Comics' three most iconic characters alongside Superman and Batman, and the film's critical and commercial breakthrough significantly influenced subsequent studio decisions to greenlight additional female-led superhero properties.
