The Departed
The Departed, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 2006, adapted the plot of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs into a Boston-set story of dual undercover operatives — a police officer embedded within organized crime and a criminal embedded within the police department — and won Scorsese his first competitive Academy Award for Best Director. The film's ensemble cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, gave Scorsese an unusually deep pool of major acting talent to draw from simultaneously, and Nicholson's performance as a crime boss loosely inspired by real Boston gangster Whitey Bulger became one of the film's most memorable elements. Its Boston setting and dialect-specific dialogue gave the film a distinct regional identity within the crime genre, and the production's extensive location filming across real Boston neighborhoods grounded the story's fictional plot in a recognizably specific urban setting. The Departed's Academy Award for Best Picture came after Scorsese had been previously nominated for Best Director multiple times without winning, and the recognition was widely interpreted within the industry as a delayed acknowledgment of Scorsese's broader career contributions to the crime genre specifically.
VS
Goodfellas
Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 1990, adapted the true story of mobster-turned-FBI-informant Henry Hill, and its famous three-and-a-half-minute unbroken Steadicam tracking shot following Hill and his date through a restaurant's kitchen entrance became one of the most celebrated single camera shots in film history. The film's narration, delivered directly by Ray Liotta's Hill character throughout, gave audiences an unusually intimate, matter-of-fact insider perspective on organized crime's mundane daily operations alongside its sudden bursts of extreme violence, a tonal combination that distinguished it from more operatically stylized mob films. Joe Pesci's performance as the volatile, unpredictable Tommy DeVito, including his famous improvised "funny how?" scene, won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and became one of the most widely quoted and referenced individual performances in the crime genre. Goodfellas' rapid editing style, needle-drop soundtrack of period-appropriate pop and rock songs, and its focus on the everyday texture of mob life rather than just its dramatic set pieces directly influenced the visual and narrative style of numerous subsequent crime films and television series, including The Sopranos.
