The Getty Center
The Getty Center opened in 1997 after more than a decade of construction, built on a hilltop site in the Santa Monica Mountains specifically chosen by oil magnate J. Paul Getty's namesake trust to house both an art museum and the Getty's broader conservation and research institutes under one architecturally unified campus designed by Richard Meier. Meier's building complex, clad in more than a million square feet of travertine stone imported from Italy, was designed with a deliberately restrained white palette specifically to let the surrounding gardens and the art inside provide the visual color, a choice that's made the building itself as much a destination as its collection. The Getty's tram system, which carries visitors up the hillside from the parking structure to the museum campus, was built as a deliberate design choice to slow arrival down and create a sense of anticipation and separation from the city below — an unusual piece of visitor-experience engineering for an American museum. For a Los Angeles attractions list, the Getty Center is the essential "the art, the architecture, and the view, all at once" entry — a billion-dollar hilltop campus whose Richard Meier-designed buildings and gardens draw visitors as much as the European paintings inside.
VS
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909, originally built to carry sewage pipes out past the surf line before quickly evolving into a public amusement and recreation destination, and it now marks the official western terminus of the historic Route 66, a distinction commemorated by a sign at the pier's entrance that's become one of the most photographed spots in the city. Pacific Park, the small amusement park built directly on the pier, includes a solar-powered Ferris wheel that's become an instantly recognizable nighttime landmark along the entire Santa Monica coastline, its colored lights visible for miles up and down the beach after dark. The pier has survived multiple storm-related collapses and reconstructions over its century-plus history, including a partial collapse in a 1983 storm that destroyed a significant portion of the original structure, requiring a substantial rebuild that's kept the pier a continuously evolving structure rather than an untouched historic relic. For a Los Angeles attractions list, Santa Monica Pier is the essential "the beach with rides attached" entry — a 1909 sewage-pipe pier turned amusement landmark, still marking the literal end of Route 66 at the edge of the Pacific.
