The Hobbit
"The Hobbit," published by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, follows the reluctant hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he's recruited by the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves to reclaim treasure guarded by the dragon Smaug, serving as a lighter, more child-oriented precursor to Tolkien's later "The Lord of the Rings." Tolkien reportedly began writing the story almost by accident, famously scrawling its opening line — "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" — on a blank page while grading student examination papers, before developing it into a full manuscript over several years. The novel's success convinced Tolkien's publisher to request a sequel, which eventually grew into the vastly more expansive "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, making "The Hobbit" the direct origin point for the entire subsequent Middle-earth literary and cinematic universe. The Hobbit's combination of its accidental, off-the-cuff origin story and its role as the direct genesis of Tolkien's entire Middle-earth legacy has made it one of the most historically significant fantasy novels ever published.

The Name of the Wind
"The Name of the Wind," published by Patrick Rothfuss in 2007 as the first volume of "The Kingkiller Chronicle," follows the legendary Kvothe recounting his own life story — from impoverished orphan to renowned magician and musician — to a chronicler across a single frame-narrative day. Rothfuss reportedly spent over a decade writing and revising the novel before its publication, and its dense, lyrically precise prose style drew significant critical comparisons to more traditionally "literary" writing than much contemporary genre fantasy, helping it cross over to readers outside the genre's usual audience. The novel's massive fan following developed a reputation for impatience regarding its long-delayed third volume, with the wait between "The Wise Man's Fear" (2011) and the still-unpublished finale becoming one of the most discussed cases of prolonged anticipation in modern fantasy publishing. The Name of the Wind's combination of Rothfuss's meticulously crafted prose style and its status as one of the most anticipated unfinished fantasy series of the modern era has made it one of the most significant fantasy novels published in the 21st century.
