The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," published by C.S. Lewis in 1950 as the first-published volume of "The Chronicles of Narnia," follows four English siblings who discover a magical wardrobe leading to the land of Narnia, where they join the lion Aslan against the tyrannical White Witch. Lewis, a close friend and Oxford colleague of J.R.R. Tolkien within the informal literary group known as the Inklings, wrote the Narnia books with an explicit Christian allegorical framework, most directly reflected in Aslan's sacrificial death and resurrection at the story's climax. The novel's success launched a seven-book series that became one of the best-selling children's book series of the 20th century, and its imaginative portal-fantasy premise — an ordinary household object leading to an entire hidden magical world — became one of the most widely imitated devices in subsequent children's fantasy literature. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe's combination of Lewis's Christian allegorical framework and its hugely influential portal-fantasy premise has made it one of the most significant fantasy novels in children's literature.
VS
The Hobbit
"The Hobbit," published by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, follows the reluctant hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he's recruited by the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves to reclaim treasure guarded by the dragon Smaug, serving as a lighter, more child-oriented precursor to Tolkien's later "The Lord of the Rings." Tolkien reportedly began writing the story almost by accident, famously scrawling its opening line — "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" — on a blank page while grading student examination papers, before developing it into a full manuscript over several years. The novel's success convinced Tolkien's publisher to request a sequel, which eventually grew into the vastly more expansive "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, making "The Hobbit" the direct origin point for the entire subsequent Middle-earth literary and cinematic universe. The Hobbit's combination of its accidental, off-the-cuff origin story and its role as the direct genesis of Tolkien's entire Middle-earth legacy has made it one of the most historically significant fantasy novels ever published.
