The Notebook
"The Notebook," published by Nicholas Sparks in 1996 as his debut novel, tells the story of Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton, two young lovers separated by class differences and World War II, and their eventual reunion decades later. The novel was reportedly inspired by the real-life relationship of Sparks's wife's grandparents, and its framing device, an elderly man reading the couple's story aloud to a woman suffering from memory loss, became one of the most recognizable structural devices in modern popular romance fiction. Sparks's debut launched what became an extraordinarily prolific career writing bestselling romance novels, and "The Notebook" itself became a defining touchstone of the genre after its hugely successful 2004 film adaptation introduced the story to an even larger audience. The Notebook's combination of its grounding in a real family's love story and its enduring framing device of memory and devotion has made it one of the most influential modern romance novels in American publishing.

Gone with the Wind
"Gone with the Wind," published by Margaret Mitchell in 1936, follows Scarlett O'Hara, the headstrong daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, through the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, centered on her tumultuous relationship with the roguish Rhett Butler. The novel was Mitchell's only published book during her lifetime, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937, becoming one of the best-selling novels of all time and one of the most commercially successful books in American publishing history. The novel's 1939 film adaptation became one of the highest-grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation, further cementing the story's place in American popular culture, though both the book and film have also drawn significant and ongoing criticism for their romanticized depiction of the antebellum South and slavery. Gone with the Wind's combination of Mitchell's sole Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and its status as one of the best-selling books in American history has made it one of the most commercially significant, if historically contested, romance novels ever published.
